Ontario, California (March 4, 2010) — Design awards come few and far between in the world of outdoor apparel, but maternity start-up Mountain Mama has just been nominated for two. The nominations for Polartec’s Apex Award for design excellence and innovation come mere weeks after the company launched its first line at the Outdoor Retailer Winter Marketplace in Salt Lake City.
Receiving the nod from Polartec’s “secret shoppers” are Mountain Mama’s Clouds Rest Baselayer, the first technical baselayer for maternity, and the Fairview Fleece Jacket, which fits through all stages of pregnancy with an adaptable wrap design.
“After so many years as an outdoor athlete and working in the industry, I knew there were great fabrics that could meet the demands of active pregnancy,” said company founder Teresa Delfin. “Polartec was a natural choice for us because their fabrics are as innovative as our designs. We’re honored that they’ve recognized the two pieces at the center of our fall line with these nominations.”
Among the design innovations Mountain Mama employs with the Clouds Rest Baselayer is a unique BellygloveTM fit, which eliminates drafts and peek-a-boo bellies, and optional suspenders to keep baselayer bottoms in place in the tricky final trimester. The Fairview Jacket uses an ingenious wrap design so that it fits at all stages of pregnancy—and beyond.
The Polartec Apex Award is given each year to designs that expand the limits of what garments can do. After being selected by Polartec from among all the apparel and accessories being made from their fabric, the nominated products are “judged on innovation, design, style, workmanship, fit and functionality.” After extensive testing and review by their panel of judges, Polartec will announce the winners in May.
Apex Award winners receive an etched Tiffany trophy and will be featured at Polartec’s booth at the summer Outdoor retailer show, as well as being promoted by Polartec throughout the year.
Founded by an outdoor industry veteran who is passionate about her adventures, Mountain Mama fills the gap between maternity wear and technical attire for the millions of women who count on performance clothing.
“Women understand how important it is to stay active and healthy during pregnancy,” said Mountain Mama founder Teresa Delfín. “Our mission is to provide the quality technical apparel that will let them continue to enjoy playing outside in comfort and style.”
