Mountain Mama will be receiving the Outdoor Industry Association's Outdoor Inspiration Award at an evening celebration on January 21 at the Outdoor Retailer Winter Market. Renowned mountaineer Reinhold Messner will be presenting the award to Mountain Mama company founder and CEO Teresa Delfín.
Mountain Mama won the inaugural award in the company category, along with retailing giant REI. The OIA announcement of the award winners cited Mountain Mama’s commitment to helping pregnant women “remain active in the outdoor pursuits that they love and want to foster in their children.”
"Our mission is to inspire and empower more women to get outside and play, and it's just enormously gratifying to receive this recognition," said Delfín. "We're humbled to accept this award on behalf of all the women worldwide who know that adventure doesn't end with pregnancy, it's just beginning."
While the Outdoor Inspiration Award, sponsored by adidas Outdoor, was to have named one winner in each of three categories – individual, organization and company – the company award was split into two “due to the difference in reach and resources that can affect change within the outdoor industry.”
The OIA announcement notes that – in addition to providing unique technical apparel for maternity, including the first maternity snow pant, which will be unveiled at OR Winter Market – “Mountain Mama has champions all over the country who sing its praises as the only product line of its kind ‘in the world.’”
Mountain Mama was founded in July 2009, and Delfín unveiled her first collection last January at Outdoor Retailer Winter Market 2010. Her Fairview Wrap Jacket received a 2010 Polartec ® APEX Award for design excellence and innovation, while her Clouds Rest Baselayer was also nominated.
Delfín, an 18-year veteran of the outdoor industry who has trekked the Inca Trail twice, climbed 19,000-foot mountains, and won the Panamanian National Bouldering Competition, has an M.A. from UC Berkeley and a Ph.D. from Stanford. She is a member of the Outdoor Industries Women's Coalition and the Outdoor Industry Association.
